Warm Weather Inspiration
I love burlesque artist Dita Von Teese for many reasons: making pale look sexy, making curvy look stylish, having the perfect shade of lipstick on at all times…
This picture of her at the Coachella music festival makes me love her even more.

Even among the heat and crowds of an outdoor festival, she’s perfectly accessorized, dressed up but comfortable, and of course lovely.

News From New York
I'm finishing up the tail end of a work trip to NYC, and I have some scoops to share with you, dear readership! (Hopefully other people haven't covered this already, because I would hate to bore you) Here goes...
1. Marc By Marc's Spring accessories line is very, very 80s. Lots of neon, poofy net-covered bows, etc. Yawn. However, he does have an amazing new take on the flat mouse shoe! I'd describe it to you, but I don't want to spoil the surprise - or aid knock-off artists.
2. Turns out Irregular Choice might be closing its doors in the US forever. I'm not going to lie - I'm pretty thrilled!
3. My most interesting piece of news: remember how Heatherette canceled their runway show this week? Well, someone high up in Richie Rich's employ happened to let slip that Mr. Rich has left Heatherette completely. He's focusing on his new shoe line instead. Hmmm.
For those of you who twitter, you can get any and all fashion news I come across in real time - plus trivial facts about my life, like how excited I am to own a neti pot, or how much I enjoy watching chick flicks with my cat. It's thrilling.

Across The Sea
Why is it, in this day and age of voice over IP, accessible travel, and increasing global awareness... why is it that I can't buy this damn skirt?

I've waited for a year for it to come to the US La Redoute site, and still it thwarts me with its UK-ness. Its tunic and shirt brethren have made the arduous journey to the States, but still the skirt has not. La Redoute customer service tells me that somewhere in their corporate offices, someone decided this skirt didn't need to sell in some countries.
Why?

A Questionable Success
Well over a year ago, I bought a Japanese sewing book on eBay. It specialized in turning oversized scarves/t-shirts/sweaters into cute and girly dresses/skirts/tops, complete with unintelligible instructions and vaguely instructional images. I loved it. I had a giant T.Rex Electric Warrior shirt laying around, so I purchased some gold ribbon and decided to make a less frilly version of this dress

with these instructions.

Today, well over a year later, I've finally finished it! My sewing skills have improved not one single bit since I started this project, but I like to imagine that the finished product is still something to be excited about.

If anyone wants a larger sized scan of the oh-so-helpful instructions, email me!

Too Obscure For Me
On this lovely holiday evening, I thought I'd share some effortless vintage style, courtesy of my new favorite New Zealand band The Verlaines.
The saturated colors, chunky boots, tailored dressing, haircuts, and freedom in front of the camera... it all feels very modern and hip in the best of ways. Of course it doesn't hurt that the song is brilliant (the talented Mr. Stephen Malkmus of Pavement once covered it).
Happy Thanksgiving!

Worst Of The Best
Erin Fetherston for Target is out... and I could spend a great deal of time noting that the lower priced collection is just as cheap and thoughtless as her "designer" line, full of shapeless sacks and cutesy frills... but I won't (sort of) because there are more important things at hand!
Namely, Target.com.

Erin Fetherston for Target: bad clothes, even worse photography.
Target is a brilliant retailer, they have my undying affection, and they do so many things right! Just yesterday they sold me a concealer brush and a blush brush for a total of $7, and a tailored taffeta party dress for $50. Where else can I get style and quality at that kind of price?
Certainly not Target.com. Their online product photography - awkward models in photos that are washed out and devoid of detail - leaves everything to be desired; I can't wrap my head around it, how a place that's so good can do something so bad.
So I have to ask you, my internet savvy readers, does anyone do it worse than Target.com? Or must we accept that the smartest American retailer is also the dumbest?
