Worst Of The Best
Erin Fetherston for Target is out... and I could spend a great deal of time noting that the lower priced collection is just as cheap and thoughtless as her "designer" line, full of shapeless sacks and cutesy frills... but I won't (sort of) because there are more important things at hand!
Namely, Target.com.

Erin Fetherston for Target: bad clothes, even worse photography.
Target is a brilliant retailer, they have my undying affection, and they do so many things right! Just yesterday they sold me a concealer brush and a blush brush for a total of $7, and a tailored taffeta party dress for $50. Where else can I get style and quality at that kind of price?
Certainly not Target.com. Their online product photography - awkward models in photos that are washed out and devoid of detail - leaves everything to be desired; I can't wrap my head around it, how a place that's so good can do something so bad.
So I have to ask you, my internet savvy readers, does anyone do it worse than Target.com? Or must we accept that the smartest American retailer is also the dumbest?

oh s, you just hit the nail on the head! (i just realized i was about to say "you are so right on target!" gah). both re: little girl fetherston and target.
re: fetherston: i really want to know what a psychologist would say about her desire to dress herself and other fully grown women as if they were preschoolers.
re: target.com. oh where to begin. i actually don't find their photography too bad. i think because i know how the clothes are in the stores i can usually guess at the fabric/texture/quality/cut etc. the fact that i'm at my local target almost weekly helps. plus, since i can return stuff so easily, it almost doesn't matter to me (which i'm sure target does NOT appreciate - i return probably 2/3 of what i buy from their website... eek.)
BUT here is my problem - and i wrote them a several-paragraphs-long missive about this - their search functionality, and the way items are listed, are complete and utter CRAP. for example, this item - http://www.target.com/Merona-Modern-Square-Pendant-Necklace/dp/B000OWNE5C/sr=1-2/qid=1195707556/ref=sr_1_2/601-7915902-5914558?ie=UTF8&index=target&field-browse=1038576&rank=price&rh=k%3A%20silver%20earrings%20&page=1 - comes up when i do a search on "silver earrings". it's a blue necklace and neither the word silver OR earrings appears anywhere on the product page. this gets me so irritated i cannot even tell you.
also, the way that the same item in different colors is/are listed as separate items - also totally irritating! so much of what they sell is basics that i want to buy in multiple colors, and i have to go wading through search results to find them instead of being able to go from one page. plus multiple times i have seen the same item/different colors, listed with slightly different names, so that all of the items don't actually show up in the search results. quite annoying.
god i've written so much - i clearly spend too much time on their website! but seriously, at least half my work wardrobe comes from target, and i'm sure that more would if their website wasn't so crappy. and indeed, i can't think of a retailer whose website frustrates me more. (though the gap family of websites do have some very irritating "features").

a., I do so wish we lived in the same city. I completely agree with you re: all of this. Target's search function is incredible garbage, as is their site layout: you can't actually get to GO tops from the GO dresses screen, you have to go back to the main GO International screen? Really? You'd think a mega-store would put a little more effort into making sure the customer could find what they want to buy!
i know huh!? we'd have so much to talk about. i so agree with you.
so guess what, i finally started my own blog. how often i'll update, god only knows. and i'm super-protective of my identity online, so i'm a little freaked out about starting it, but there it is!

i love target so much, it's where i get almost everything. i obsess over the target weekly ad, which is always done tastefully and with style. the one thing i refuse to do is go online to target's website because it is so poorly done. i couldn't agree with you more.
